Bike Inner Tube

A spare inner tube is the quickest fix for a flat tyre. Match the size printed on the side of your tyre, check your valve type, and you're back riding. Five sizes cover kids bikes, BMX, mountain bikes, e-bikes, and road, gravel and hybrid bikes.

How to read the size: wheel size first, then the range of tyre widths the tube fits. For example 29" x 1.90-2.35" fits 29 inch tyres from 1.90 to 2.35 inches wide. Road sizes (700c) are measured in millimetres, so 700c x 25-32mm fits 700c tyres from 25mm to 32mm wide. The mm figure after the valve type is the valve length.

How to pick your size

1. Read the numbers on the side of your tyre, e.g. 29 x 2.20 or 700 x 28c.
2. The first number is the wheel size. The second is the tyre width - pick the tube whose range covers your tyre width.
3. Check your valve. Schrader is the wide valve, the same as a car tyre (sometimes marked AV or SV on the box). Presta is thin with a small locknut at the tip, common on road bikes (sometimes marked PV or FV).

• 48mm valves suit standard rims. The 20" has a shorter 40mm valve for shallower kids and BMX rims.

Fitting tip

Before fitting a new tube, carefully run your fingers around the inside of the tyre and remove whatever caused the puncture (thorn, glass or wire), or the new tube can go flat too.
